Southern Maryland Sampler:
Life on the Water

2 Days/1 Night

Day 1

Your tour will begin at Historic St. Mary’s City. Experience life as the first settlers would have lived.  Visit Master Spray at Godiah Spray Plantation to learn your duties as an indentured servant.  Step on board the Maryland Dove and learn how to measure distance on the water and see how your “quarters” would have appeared.  Enjoy “An Extra-Ordinary Luncheon Buffet” at the Groaning Board Buffet on the lawns of the State House of 1676.  After lunch, drive across the Thomas Johnson Bridge spanning the Patuxent River for a visit to bustling Solomons Island.  The “island” was once a thriving fishing village and is now popular sightseeing destination. Stroll down the Riverwalk past the J.C. Lore Oyster House and stop in to see how oysters were harvested and canned.  Find out the meaning of “being paid by the boom”.   Check into a local hotel to relax.  Hungry?  Enjoy Italian-style seafood at DiGiovanni’s Dock of the Bay waterfront restaurant which features live entertainment.

Day 2

Have breakfast at your hotel before leaving to visit the Piney Point Lighthouse, also called the “Lighthouse of the Presidents”.  Then, get ready to crew aboard an authentic hand-built Skipjack.  Experience the fun of helping to hoist the sails or take a turn at the wheel.  You’ll be treated to a delicious lunch while cruising along the beautiful Potomac River.  You may get the chance to photograph an osprey nest in one of the channel markers.  After a long day of sun and salt air, you’ll be ready to plan a trip back for another sampling of Southern Maryland at its best.

Please call for detailed itinerary and availability.

A Passport to History
in Charles County

Day Trip

Meet your guide at a prearranged place.  First stop will be to visit Dr. Samuel A. Mudd.  Possibly unaware of the identity of his patient, he was the country doctor who set the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth and gave him a room overnight after Booth assassinated President Lincoln on April 14, 1865.  Dr. Mudd was tried and convicted and sentenced to life on an island prison in Florida.  President Andrew Johnson pardoned him in 1869 for his service in caring for the yellow fever victims during an outbreak at the island prison.  There will be costumed docents on site to set the stage and mood during the visit.

Enjoy a drive through the countryside and a delicious lunch at a restaurant on the Potomac River in Pope’s Creek near where John Wilkes Booth may have crossed during his escape.  Then continue on to Port Tobacco, one of the oldest communities on the East Coast, colonized by the English as early as 1634 and at one time, a major seaport and original county seat.  A costumed interpreter will share fascinating stories about that period in history as you sit on the benches of the courthouse and walk in the footsteps of some Revolutionary War leaders.

We will stop briefly at St. Ignatius Church, Chapel Point, the nation’s oldest active parish with a continual pastorate, founded in 1641 by Fr. Andrew White who came to Maryland on the Ark and Dove in 1634.   Finally, visit Haberdeventure, the home of Thomas Stone, one of Maryland’s four signers of the Declaration of Independence.  Hear the story of Mr. Stone and his ailing wife, Margaret and see the unique five-part Colonial mansion. (Note: a ride through the Amish Countryside can be substituted when this site is closed)

Please call for detailed itinerary and availability.  This tour can easily be expanded to a 2-day tour adding other sites including Mount Carmel Monastery.

Settlers and Their Religion:
Historic Churches of Southern Maryland

2Days/1Night

Day 1:

Depart Destination and arrive at St. Clement’s Island Museum to trace the area’s history through exhibits, which highlight the plan of the Calvert family to find a land that would be founded on the idea of Religious Toleration.  After leaving St. Clement’s, we will visit St. Francis Xavier Church, established in 1731, which shows unusual architecture due to the religious intolerance of that era. Depart for Leonardtown where you will enjoy a delicious meal at a French restaurant, Café des Artistes, located on the Leonardtown Square, one of the only remaining town squares in Maryland.  Check into your hotel, Hampton Inn to rest and prepare for the evening.  Travel across the beautiful Patuxent River into Calvert County where we will take a short Walking Tour of Solomons Island before having dinner at DiGiovanni’s Dock of the Bay Italian restaurant on the waterfront.  Enjoy the sunset from their dock or stay and linger over dinner and listen to the music provided by a local singer/guitarist.  Return to your hotel for the night.

Day 2:

Start with a hearty Continental breakfast at the hotel.  Our first stop will be a visit to St. Ignatius Church, built in 1785, when the American Revolution had restored the religious toleration of the original Maryland settlement.  Then we will take a walk through history at St. Mary’s City, site of the first English settlement in Maryland.  Visit the State House and step into the cool and peaceful interior of Trinity Church, erected in 1829 using bricks salvaged from the original State House.  Enjoy “An Extra-Ordinary Luncheon Buffet” at the Groaning Board Buffet on the lawns of the State House of 1676.  After lunch, we will go to St. George’s Church, the oldest Episcopal Church in Maryland established in 1634.  Your glimpse of the early settler religious life will conclude with our final stop at Christ Church (Episcopal) in Chaptico, where ancestors of Francis Scott Key are buried.  Depart for home.
